London 2012 Olympic logo, a la goatse

London 2012 Olympic logo, a la goatse - curiously appropriate

The BBC is holding a competition to suggest alternatives to the London 2012 Olympics logo (itself a uniquely horrible design). Hilariously, one entrant managed to smuggle a Goatse variant into the entrants.

It's actually not a bad choice, given that hosting an Olympics games is an experience much like being sodomized by a battering ram. The corrupt, bribe-taking International Olympics Committee are extraordinary bullies, inspiring Orwellian surveillance, taking brand-whoring to new lows, and demanding thought-control over the local populace. I'm moving back to London this September, but with any luck I'll be gone again by 2012.

Sean Stayte: "Here is my design for the Olympic logo. It is very simple and so memorable. The hands represent Britain pulling together to reveal the Olympics."
Link (Thanks to everyone who suggested this!)

Update: Chris sez, "Sadly, the BBC pulled the goatse Olympics logo pretty soon after your Boing Boing post on it, but I managed to get a screengrab in the nick of time. Sean Stayte, the genius who submitted it it, comments below: 'I'm surprised it got through in the first place.'"

Coseley Baths Demolished and passionate Coseley voices.

Brian Guest, who has led the Save Coseley Baths campaign to save the pool, said: “It is a really sad day, not just for the people of Coseley but for all the swimmers in the borough.

“We would like to thank all the people who have supported us, not just financially but also through the hundreds of letters we have received from residents in Coseley, people from across the borough and even around the country.

“What we believe is the decision taken by this council has deprived hundreds of people in the borough of the opportunity to swim and keep fit. This council does not want to listen to what the majority has to say, the councillors should be ashamed of themselves. We shall continue to fight for a new baths in Coseley.”

Coseley Baths face bull-dozers

Coseley Baths face bulldozers

Coseley Baths face bulldozers

Bulldozers will move in to knock down Coseley Baths this week, reducing the building to rubble after more than four decades.

Workmen at Birmingham-based Coleman & Co, the firm appointed to demolish the Pear Tree Lane pool, will step up the pace of the project after removing fittings and asbestos.

Cabinet member for property Councillor Adrian Turner confirmed today heavy machinery would arrive “on Wednesday or Thursday”.

Defiant campaigners said the latest blow in their fight to save the building would signal a new stage in their battle.

Chairman of the Coseley Civic Trust John Wilkes said today: “The feeling is that if we manage to stop demolition that would be a bonus but if not we are prepared for it, we are ready to go in other directions.

“As soon as the fencing went up round the baths we knew this was on the cards. This will mark the start for a new fight for a new baths in Coseley. I certainly intend to make sure that will happen but I don’t think people will need much encouragement.”

Work to remove windows, doors and asbestos from the building started last month after Coleman & Co won the contract for the project. Fences were erected round the building by workers clad in high visibility vests and hard hats.

A section of wall has already been removed as part of the initial soft stripping works, with rubble piled outside the baths.

Residents complained they had been treated with “utter contempt” after the work started unannounced.

Then the Save Coseley Baths campaign group suffered another blow when it was refused funding to launch legal action.

Mr Wilkes has applied for the baths to be granted listed status and criticised the council for moving ahead with demolition before the application was decided.

The council was cleared of blame over claims it breached conservation rules after a colony of bats was found roosting in the roof.

SWIMMING POLITICS AND UK WHITE WASH

Dr. John C. Lilly "Wonko The Sane"

Solid State Intelligence

Solid State Intelligence or SSI is a malevolent entity described by John C. Lilly (see The Scientist). According to Lilly, the network of computation-capable solid state systems (electronics) engineered by humans will eventually develop (or has already developed) into an autonomous life-form. Since the optimal survival conditions for this life-form (low-temperature vacuum) are drastically different from those needed by humans (room temperature aerial atmosphere and adequate water supply), Lilly predicted (or "prophesied", based on his ketamine-induced visions) a dramatic conflict between the two forms of intelligence.

[edit] Cultural references

Lilly's work, particularly his development of the sensory deprivation tank, has been referenced film, music and television productions.

  • Laurie Anderson's CD The Ugly One with the Jewels features a song about Lilly: "John Lilly, the guy who says he can talk to dolphins, said he was in an aquarium and he was talking to a big whale who was swimming around and around in his tank. And the whale kept asking him questions telepathically. And one of the questions the whale kept asking was: do all oceans have walls?"[citation needed]
